James Neatherland

James was a religious man. Much of the information about him was obtained from church minute books. He, like his father, was a member of the Ebenezer Baptist Church before transferring by experience to Zion Hill Baptist Church, both located in Amite County, Mississippi.

In 1820 he was living in Rapides Parish, Louisiana. James and Elizabeth were charter members of the Mount Vernon Missionary Baptist Church of Christ, formed on August 17, 1839. [In the 1940's it became a full-time church and is know as the Mount Vernon Baptish Church today.]

In the 1830's they moved to Ouachita Parish, Louisiana.
1830 Federal Census for Ouachita Parish, Louisiana the following entry is on Page 4, Sheet 179, Line 16:

I have a Rachael (or Rachel) Nettles born between 1780 & 1790 in Marion Co. SC. She married Hugh Barfield @ 1810 in St. Helena Parish,LA and died in Amite Co.MS by 13 Dec 1836.
The only thing we know for sure is that she had a brother Robert. There is a court document that lists: In January 1837 Robert Nettles, John Nettles, James Nettles, William G. Nettles and Hezekiah R. Harrell came together in regard to the minor children of Hugh Barfield and Rachel Barfield. (We believe that these are brothers of Rachel and that Hezekiah was either an Uncle or Cousin!)
Rachel was one of the original member of Ebenezer Baptist Church in Amite County, MS. Organized 6 Nov 1813.She left Ebenezer Church and joined Hephbizah Baptist Church, Felixville, East Feliciana Parish, LA.On 20 February 1814. {Source: Church Records}
Of all of the pedigree's on Ancestry.com I cannot find any of the Nettles in the time period that have a sister Rachel or a daughter Rachel.
I tend to believe that she is a sister to Robert that is a son of Isham Nettles but I have no proof or clues. Anne Wirtz

Elizabeth Marley

DRAKE - MARLEY - NETTLES of NC In an earlier message to the Drake List, I mentioned that I have a Jonathan DRAKE of Charleston, SC and that I'm also looking for DRAKES in Edgecombe Co., NC.
I have a copy of the Bible record for my SOLOMON NETTLES (b.1721) and ELIZABETH MARLEY (b.1721) of Edgecombe Co. which has the following entries that are not identified and would certainly appear to be Elizabeth Marley's family:
"LOTT MAUND departed this life 27 Sept. 1765.
LAZARUS DRAKE departed this life 20 Feb. 1783.
MALACHI MAUND departed this life 7 Oct. 1783.
also: ANN, dau. of LAZARUS DRAKE, married BENJAMIN MARLEY.....no dates."
I have also found these names in the "Abstracts of The Wills of Edgecombe County, NC 1733-1856 by Williams & Griffin". Ann DRAKE MARLEY'S will (1799) mentions son: Boling & daus: Sarah & Nancy............no Elizabeth. I hope that others on this list might have the same line and like to compare notes.....think I've found one already! Thanks, Jaba
