SUSAN WILLIAMS LEE
1826 - 1863

Dear Lee cousins,

I am looking for my gr gr grandmother, Susan Williams Lee, who was born 29 Aug. 1826, married Joseph Daniel Bozeman on 1 July 1847 in Lowndes Co., Alabama, with Jesse Lee, Minister of the Gospel, officiating, and died in Butler Co. on 5 Apr. 1863. She was buried in Cool Springs Cemetery near Greenville.

I have browsed the entire Census for Lowndes County for 1830 when she was a small child, 1840 when she was a teenager, and found her in 1850 living with her new husband between his family (Etheldred Bozeman and Jane Daniel) and several other Lee families.

I have also found Joseph Daniel Bozeman and Susan Williams Lee living in Wilcox Co., in 1860, where he was an overseer.

I don’t know why she was in Butler Co., in 1863, when she died. Her husband was involved in the war, and they may have felt more secure from Federal pillaging in a more thickly populated part of the countryside. They may have had relatives there. Her children were 10 years old and under.

By a process of elimination, I have come to believe that her parents were Martin Lee and Nancy A. Partin.

Martin Lee had a brother in the county, Rev. David Lee, who was a prominent minister. They both were sons of Joel Lee and Media Lassiter, who still lived in Conecuh Co.

The 1840 Census shows that Martin Lee had 6 daughters, two of whom were in the age range that they could have been Susan. (You probably know that before 1850 the Census only mentions the head of the family by name and all other household members are given only by age range and sex.).
The other four younger daughters could have been Eliza, Sarah, Medea, and Mary Elizabeth. Martha had not yet been born in 1840.

They also had 3 sons in 1840, the younger two of whom could have been Joel and Elbert. David had not yet been born. The oldest son could have been the R. M. Lee, who lived close to Martin Lee and son Joel Lee in 1860. (dwellings 168, 169 and 172)

The catch to this theory is that the name Martin has not been given in my family since then, although Joseph Daniel Bozeman and Susan Williams Lee did have a Martha, an Eliza and a David. My gr grandfather was David Theophilus Bozeman, who may have been named after his uncle Rev. David Lee. (Theophilus = Gk. for Lover of God).

Note: There is another Martin Lee in Lowndes County of this period. That was Martin Lee and wife Martha Day. They are of a similar age as Martin Lee and Nancy Partin, but other researchers have named their children, and their older children do not include Susan.

All of the other Lee households in Lowndes County in the period 1840, 1850, 1860 are a bit too young to have been the parents of Susan Williams Lee, and their children do not include her, when they have been named by other researchers.

I would appreciate any of your comments on this theory. Do any of you have any information or ideas that might either confirm or reject the theory that Susan Williams Lee is the daughter of Martin Lee and wife Nancy Partin?

Yours truly, Mike Robinson
Big Spring, Texas
