Notes

I D Caples

ID is his name. These are not initials for some other name.
ID, known as Joe during his military years, served with the U.S. Navy as a coxswain during WWII. During the war, his ship was hit by enemy fire, splitting it in half. He was on the surviving half. The damaged ship drifted for some time. Sailors who passed away were kept aboard so as not to attract sharks to the already deadly situation. The sailors ended up drinking saltwater in attempts to survive. ID developed an ulcerated stomach as a result. The medical problem followed him the rest of his life. He was finally rated as totally disabled later in life (during the 1970's).

Carnie Caples

Carnie served with the U.S. Marine Corp during WWII. He trained as a demolition expert. During the war, he fought on the islands of Boganville, Solomon Islands - the Battle of Hand Grenade Hill (Thanksgiving Day 1943), Guam (July 21 - August 16, 1944) and Iwo Jima (February 18 - March 16, 1945), in that order. His main job was to blow up "pill boxes" that the enemy used as a defense. The military finally felt PFC Caples had seen enough action and sent him home. During transport by ship back to the United States, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt died (April 12, 1945). PFC Caples was discharged from the Marines on October 15, 1945.

June 2002: Carnie Caples confirmed to the best of his knowledge, all of his siblings were born in Ouachita Parish, Louisiana.

Alton Buford Caples

Alton was still a boy when World War II began in 1941. Being under aged (14 years old), Alton lied to the recruiter and enlisted in the Army. After training he was sent to the Philippines. While there, the Army discovered his true age and sent him home. After reaching an acceptable age, Alton enlisted a second time in the Army. This time he was sent to fight in Germany.
