"John Taylor, September 12, 1804 - December 30, 1877; Native of Georgia, Son of William and Catherine Gray."
Submitted by: Timothy D. Hudson 1866 - 1883 UNION PARISH LOUISIANA OBITUARIES ... available on microfilm at the Hill Memorial Library, Louisiana State University campus, Baton Rouge, Louisiana. from Ouachita Parish newspapers
The Union Record 4 Feb 1878 "AN OLD LAND-MARK GONE. Scarce had last Sunday's Sun announced to the world its coming, the spirit of Judge Taylor "crossed over the river and rested beneath the shade of the trees." Judge Taylor was born in Georgia in 1804, and in early youth moved to Butler County, Alabama. For a number of years he was Sheriff of that county. Before Union Parish was created, he settled in what was then Ouachita Parish, in 1837, and after the division in 1838, was appointed Judge of Union Parish. This position he held for several years, holding in his hand for the rich and poor alike the scales of Justice, well poised. He served three successive terms in the legislature of Louisiana, where, by his good judgment and unswerving fidelity to his State and Constituents, the plaudit of "well done thou good and faithful servant" was his reward. Judge Taylor's third wife survives him. He leaves 47 children and grandchildren, all of whom live in this parish, except one son, Capt. J. G. Taylor of Ouachita Parish. Union Parish can ill afford to loose such men, but none are exempt from the claims of the grave, and we bow in humble submission to him that doeth all things well. 'Leaves have their time to fall, And wither with the North wind's breath, And stars to set - but thou has't All seasons for thine own, of! Death.'" [Note: The Union Record was a newspaper published in Union Parish between 1866 and the 1880s. Unfortunately, the only known extant copy is a partial page from 1866. This obituary was included by the late Mr. John Fletcher Ramsey in his book on the Taylor family, published posthumously by his daughter in 1982.].
